Autumn A
This term we have started with a book called 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. The children have been working on a variety of skills in their English lessons, but have had a particular focus on comprehension skills this term. We have been looking at what the question is asking us and what is the most appropriate method of answering.
We will be reading widely and accessing different types of text, e.g. poetry, non-fiction and different genres of fiction. We will be working on answering questions based on fact retrieval, inference and deduction skills, word meanings in different contexts and comparison questions.
We will also be looking at a variety of vocabulary in our grammar, punctuation and spelling lessons, such as:
- Semi-colons,
- Colons,
- Subordinating and Co-ordinating conjunctions,
- Brackets, dashes and commas for parenthesis,
- Figurative language including: personification, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia and hyperboles.
We are aiming to be reading our reading books at least three times every week!
